Strengths and
Shortcomings of our methodology.
Questionnaires.
Strengths-
©
can find out what people really think as it’s
anonymous
©
Quick way to find out what our target audience
wants
©
Questionnaires provide a way of asking questions
in a very simple and understandable format
©
Can all be done at one time (unlike individual
interviews)
Weaknesses-
©
People could lie
©
People may not bother filling them in
©
People may miss out questions/ not understand
them
©
Some questions may be accidentally bias by
slightly highlighting a certain option for the audience to choose. In order for
the results to be valid, the research must not be tainted with our group’s
opinions, only the focus group’s.
Focus Groups.
Strengths-
©
Finding out what the target audience wants
©
Quicker and easier than trying to gain the
opinions of the entire target audience
Weaknesses-
©
People may influence each other’s answers if the
talk (untrustworthy)
©
May not concentrate on the task
©
May copy other’s work if can’t be bothered to do
it themselves
If I were to redo the questionnaire then I would add more
options to the questions eg. ‘1) what
genre do you like? Pop/rap/acoustic/indie’ becomes ‘1) What genre of music do
you prefer? Pop/rap/acoustic/indie/metal/dance/rave/electro/country’ so that
there are more options for people to choose if they like. I would also add
‘both’ options to questions like ‘6) boy singer and girl singer?’ as many
people simply wrote down the word ‘both’ rather than choosing from the options.
This could possibly be due to our audience type because they may not understand
how important it is to give their own opinions, or they may not be able to be
decisive.
If I were to conduct the focus group differently, I would
supervise some of the trickier or more open questions as a group rather than
individually as I feel that some students did not understand what they were
answering.
